PEDIATRIC MASSAGE FOR THE CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

This hands on workshop allows the participants to understand the theory and practice of massage for children with special needs. Through the use of lecture, video, practicum and demonstration, the participants will gain skill in the use of these interactive techniques.


Participants will understand the physiological and psycho-social benefits of touch and massage.
Participants will learn about research supporting the use of massage for children with a variety of health issues.
Participants will understand the general precautions and medical considerations involved in massage.
Participants will learn how to modify massage in response to a child’s signs and symptoms of overstimulation.
Participants will learn about positioning and preparation techniques for massage.
Participants will practice massage techniques.
Participants should bring a doll, pillow, towel and washable sleeveless shirt and shorts.



DAY 1

2:00-2:30 Registration
2:30-3:45 Introduction to Pediatric Massage
"Heart to Heart" Video tape
General Benefits of Massage
Psychosocial Considerations in Bonding / Attachment
Specific Benefits for the Disabled Population, i.e. Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy,
Hypersensitivity, Congenital Malformations, and Prematurity.
Clinical Experiences
3:45-4:00 Break
4:00-5:30 Neurophysiologial Considerations in Massage
Autonomic Nervous System
Signs and Symptoms of Overstimulation
Infant States
General Precautions / Medical Considerations
5:30-6:00 Questions and Discussion


DAY 2

8:30-9:15 Review of the Literature Relating to Infant Massage
Preparation and Positioning
9:15-11:00 PRACTICUM
Participants will practice massage strokes with doll. (Please bring a doll and pillow to practice with!)
11:00-11:30 Video tape of massage with a child with special needs special needs child.
11:30-1:00 LUNCH BREAK
1:00- 2:00 Review of Strokes
2:00-2:45 Live Demonstration and Discussion
2:45-3:00 Break
3:00-3:45 Live Demonstration and Discussion
3:45- 4:30 Closing Questions and Comments/ Course Evaluation





Mary Gengler Fuhr, OTR/L has practiced occupational therapy in pediatrics for over 20 years in developmental centers, private practice and the public schools. She is the co-author of the book and video, Pediatric Massage for the Child with Special Needs. She is trained in Yogafit including the Yogafit Kids course. Mary has completed the basic and baby NDT class and has a strong background in sensory integration including SCSIT and SIPT training.
